Sankt Kjelds Plads Master Planning Bio DiverCITY
The Sankt Kjelds Plads expansion seamlessly integrates two disjointed urban sites into Copenhagen’s master plan, transforming car-dominated streets into a green, climate-resilient neighborhood framework. By replacing surface parking with pedestrian promenades and dedicated cycle tracks, the project prioritizes soft mobility while establishing a vibrant balance between civic life, commercial infrastructure, and urban ecology.
Bioclimatic Architecture: Operable roof greenhouses function as dynamic thermal buffers, closing in winter to reduce heating demands and opening in summer for natural cross-ventilation.
The "Show Window" Courtyard: Reinterprets Copenhagen’s traditional private courtyard into a porous, public-facing social hub protected from traffic noise by acoustic glass screens.
Socio-Ecological Infrastructure: Integrates community gardens, composting stations, a kindergarten, and sports facilities, returning organic produce and flowers to local courtyard storefronts.
Integrated Facade Alignment: Vegetated glass screens line the streetscape, establishing visual harmony with surrounding historic building colors while offering acoustic and wind protection.
Solar-Optimized Layout: South-facing residential units with private balconies maximize natural daylight and passive solar heat gain, complemented by consolidated north-facing workspaces.
