Port and Cruise Service Center
Kaohsiung, Taiwan
53 448m²
2010

Positioned at the heart of Taiwan’s largest industrial maritime hub, the Kaohsiung Port and Cruise Service Centre acts as a primary international passenger gateway. The design reconciles industrial logistics with ecological stewardship by pairing modular programmatic volumes beneath a sweeping bioclimatic vegetative carpet.

Design Drivers & Environmental Performance
Bioclimatic Aerodynamics: The sculpted form of the vegetative carpet responds directly to prevailing northern wind vectors and internal programmatic flow, optimizing passive aerodynamic performance.
Thermal Buffer & Energy Reduction: By creating a shaded microclimate directly beneath its surface, the green canopy insulates the functional spaces below, significantly reducing mechanical cooling loads and energy consumption.
Ecological & Cultural Symbolism: The planting scheme incorporates a botanical color palette inspired by Taiwan’s native bird species and diverse flora, transforming a high-capacity transit terminal into a living symbol of environmental awareness.

Reconciling economic productivity with environmental preservation, the proposal positions the Kaohsiung Port and Cruise Service Centre as a benchmark for sustainable civic infrastructure.
