Sited along Budapest’s historic urban axis within the City Park UNESCO World Heritage Buffer Zone, the complex unites the New National Gallery and Ludwig Museum inside a compact, highly efficient 44-meter-high by 200-meter-long volume.
Urban Strategy & Access Network
Historic Axis Alignment: The northern and southern primary entrances anchor directly onto Budapest’s central urban axis, establishing a continuous public link between the park and the museum network.
North Access: Escalators draw visitors directly from Hermina út into the main concourse.
South Access: A wide, gently sloped landscape ramp rises from City Park, functioning as an outdoor amphitheater for public events.
Elevated Museum Plaza: A south-facing elevated plaza between the two museum volumes acts as a central distribution hub.
Traffic & Logistics Segregation: All service dock, delivery, and public parking access is relegated to the western façade and subterranean levels (with secondary south delivery via Zichy Mihály út), keeping the surrounding parkland completely pedestrianized.
Circular Earthworks: 100% of the foundation excavation soil is repurposed on-site to construct the southern landscape ramp and surrounding event podiums.
Dual-Museum Split: The New National Gallery occupies the western volume, while the Ludwig Museum anchors the eastern wing.
Interconnected Bridges: The two distinct institutions converge at three key nodes: the ground-level public plaza, a shared permanent exhibition bridge on Level 03, and an elevated sculpture terrace on Level 06.
Landscape Podiums: Exterior perimeter platforms accommodate rotating outdoor sculpture displays, open-air concert venues, outdoor café seating, and children's play areas.
