Dar Al Uloum Library
Al Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
8 019m²
2018

This proposal reconfigures and expands the Dar Al-Uloum Library by superimposing a rotated structural grid aligned with the adjacent Al Rahmanyah Mosque. By moving parking underground, the intervention liberates the ground plane for a traditional Arabic garden, enveloping the expanded library in a contemporary moucharabieh double skin.

Tripartite Entry Axes: The rotated layout generates extra programmatic surfaces while establishing three distinct civic accesses: Main Public Entrance (East/Mosque side), Administration Access (South), and a dedicated Female-Only Entrance (North).
New Extension Program: Contains a double-height reception hall, double-height main reading rooms (South-West), Teen Zone and lounges (North-West), Children’s Library (North-East), an independent-access café, meeting suites, and a multi-level auditorium (North-East corner across levels 1 and 2).
Retrofitted Historic Core: The original volume is repurposed for compact services, acting as the operational anchor housing library reserves, technical centers, exhibition galleries, personal storage, and a prayer room.
Administrative & Media Hub: Media storage and administrative offices (mixed and female-only) are consolidated on the first floor at the nexus of the historic and new structures.
